What Are Tension Headaches?

There are two categories of tension headaches. Episodic tension headaches which happen less than 15 days per month. Episodic tension headaches are commonly linked to things like stress, caffeine, or sleep deprivation. Chronic headaches happen for more than 15 days per month and can last for a few hours or the whole day.

Common symptoms of tension headaches are:

  • Dull, aching head pain

  • Tightness or pressure running like a band around the head

  • tightness & tension through the neck, shoulders and top of the head

  • persistent pain that can be annoying

How does stress affect Tension headaches?

Stress is one of the main triggers for tension headaches. When stressed your nervous system responds by releasing stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. This reaction can often lead to muscle tension in the neck, shoulders and head, which can cause tension headaches.

Stress can also lead to teeth grinding, jaw clenching which affects muscle tension. Working long hours in front of a screen or with poor posture can also lead to this tension occurring. Tension headaches themselves, when chronic, can become stressful and create a negative feedback loop themselves that continues stress and tension being held in the neck, head and shoulders.
