Why you can’t sleep

SHVETS production

Sleep is the best cure. We all know that feeling, when you’re sick and tired, or just mentally exhausted, the comforting thought that at least after a good sleep, you can feel better. But what happens when that good sleep doesn’t happen, and you’re staring at the ceiling at 3am with your mind running its own race?

Sleep is a perfect mirror for where we’re at. It’s a state of pure yin, of rest so any disturbance, any stress, any unresolved emotional issue, any inflammation or disharmony in the gut is going to make itself known when we try to sleep. Sleep reflects back to us the state of our nervous system, and the harmony between all of the internal organs. The Liver and Gallbladder are particularly sensitive. That’s why if you’ve had alcohol, sleep is often broken, restless, and dreams are more vivid.

Overstressed and eating food you know you probably shouldn’t. Bam, anytime from 1am and you’re awake, tossing and turning, maybe even warm or restless. If it’s not severe you might fall back asleep. If you keep running on cortisol and adrenaline and red bull, chances are you won’t. Slow down. You can’t drive your car at the limit all day and expect it to keep running. Go gentle. As soon as the light is fading from the sky, ease up on your activity. Watching netflix is not relaxing for the mind, it’s still working harder than ever. Come back to the senses, feeling is the easiest. Stretching, mindfully relaxing the body and allowing it to soften helps our busy mind to wind down, and prepares it to rest.

Breathe. Not like a panicked chicken. Like a happy baby. Breathe into your belly and let it anchor you. Thought, emotions are just waves washing over the surface of the sea. But down here, in the belly, you’re anchored in the deep. Breathe this way until you fall asleep. If you wake up in the night, no problem. Just breathe, and rest.

Have you tried just about everything and still can’t sleep through the night? Do you wake up feeling tired, groggy and sluggish? Are you looking for a solution that addresses the cause of what’s happening rather than a quick band-aid fix?

I love helping clients achieve better health, and ensuring a good night’s rest is critical to good health. I’m currently working with clients, offering acupuncture, herbs, diet and mindfulness tips tailored to your individual needs, and I’d love to support you find better health.
